Donna Parker Organ Student Wins Young Organist Competition July 2009
Nathan Avakian of Portland, Oregon was awarded first place as the overall winner of the American Theatre Organ Society's 2009 Young Organist Competition. Held in Cleveland, Ohio at the ATOS Annual Convention, Nathan performed Disney's Fantasmic, Vierne's Carillon, and a medley from "42nd Street." The 18-year old displayed a seasoned stage presence, and the joy of making music came through to his audience.
Nathan has studied with Donna Parker for the past six years, and has also done some classical coaching with Jonas Nordwall. He is a senior in high school and still finds time to actively work on school and professional stage productions both on stage and behind the scenes. He is also performing theatre organ concerts as his schedule will allow.
As a musician, Nathan's mission is to showcase the versatility of the theatre organ by playing music from a diverse variety of eras and styles. He hopes to promote interest in the theatre organ among people of all ages to ensure that the instrument is preserved and kept alive for future generations.
